Skiing in New Zealand
What could be better than relaxing while looking across one of New Zealand’s stunning valleys towards towering snow-capped peaks? Skiing and snowboarding on those mountains of course! The truth of the matter is that doing both (skiing and relaxing) is what we all want to do, and we at Active Journeys can organize ski vacations to New Zealand that will satisfy your call for for adventure, as well as your need for recuperation.
The winter season in the Southern Hemisphere is opposite to ours in the Northern Hemisphere. In New Zealand the average ski season runs from around mid-June through September, depending on snow levels and daily temperatures.
In the North Island there are two commercial ski fields, Turoa and Whakapapa, on Mount Ruapehu. But it’s in the Southern Alps that skiing comes into its own with a large choice of fields, distractingly spectacular mountain scenery and a rich après-ski life. Thousands of skiers descend every season to the resort towns of Queenstown and Wanaka to ski the Remarkables, Cardrona, Treble Cone and Coronet Peak fields. There’s also Nordic skiing near Lake Wanaka with 25 kilometers (approx 15 miles) of groomed cross-country trails. If you’re an intermediate or advanced skier, take a heli-ski tour up into the Southern Alps and get your ‘ski high’ with open bowls of powder and steep, high speed chutes.
